SmoothGlo is a combined treatment that offers the benefits of both IPL and radiofrequency microneedling. With Stellar/M22 IPL and Legend Pro™ VoluDerm֭™, SmoothGlo can improve pigmentation, skin laxity, and texture in a single treatment.
IPL works by targeting pigmented molecules called chromophores like melanin or hemoglobin. This process also increases the skin’s water content to support the RF microneedling phase of treatment. RF microneedling works by creating controlled wounds in the skin to stimulate new collagen production while leaving the overall structure of the skin intact. Radiofrequency energy also causes contraction of the deep layers of the skin for tighter, firmer skin quality. Because of the increased water content of the IPL phase of treatment, radiofrequency energy is made all the more powerful. Together, these two technologies can work in harmony to rejuvenate the skin from the inside out – IPL targets the more superficial layers of the skin while RF microneedling addresses the deep supporting tissues.

During a consultation, our providers will discuss your medical history to determine if SmoothGlo will help meet your aesthetic goals. If you’ve recently been exposed to significant sunlight, are taking photosensitizing medications, are pregnant, have an implanted electronic device, or have a Fitzpatrick skin type of V-VI, you may not be a good candidate.
SmoothGlo may be uncomfortable for some patients, especially during the RF microneedling phase, but is generally well-tolerated. We can supply a topical numbing cream if needed.
Treatment begins by administering the IPL phase of treatment. IPL, intense pulsed light, uses light energy specifically calculated at a wavelength of 400-1200nm to target pigmentation. Once complete, SmoothGlo moves into the second phase of treatment. The RF microneedling phase targets the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the skin, or the deep layer comprised of collagen (75%), elastin (2%), and glycosaminoglycans which support the growth and maintenance of connective proteins. This radiofrequency energy generates controlled heating of the ECM at a range of 149⁰F-167⁰F. The gentle heating process jumpstarts new collagen and elastin production as well as contracts existing connective tissues for tighter, firmer skin.
SmoothGlo comes with minimal downtime and requires a package of four treatments for best results. These are typically spaced one month apart. Most patients see improvement within one treatment, but compounding treatments can improve your results. Any redness and sensitivity will subside within a few hours of treatment. You can return to your normal activities right away, although it’s essential to avoid sun exposure, heat, and sweating. Your skin will feel warm for a few hours after treatment. You may experience redness and mild swelling for up to 4 days after treatment. Minor scabbing will develop on the treatment areas which will naturally heal and shed off a week after treatment. Your overall skin texture may feel dry and like sandpaper, but these are normal side effects that will subside after 4-7 days of treatment.
It is important to avoid sun exposure for at least one month after treatment and discontinue the use of retinol products one week after. We recommend using gentle and non-abrasive cleansers after treatment and to moisturize frequently. Your provider will recommend a skincare regimen post procedure to ensure optimal treatment outcomes.
While you’ll see some benefits after your skin calms down, it takes several weeks for the full skin rejuvenation benefits to appear, as new collagen firms skin and the photofacial smooths and evens out skin tone.

SmoothGlo™ is a nonsurgical treatment that rejuvenates the skin by improving its texture, tone, and volume. It also reduces excess pigmentation, laxity, acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. While it’s usually done on the face, SmoothGlo™ can also be performed on the neck, chest, arms, the back of hands, and elsewhere on the body.
A series of three treatments spaced a month apart, is typically recommended. You’ll also need annual follow-up sessions to maintain them. An additional 2 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart might be more beneficial for optimal results. After you complete your 5 sessions, it is recommended you receive 2 maintenance sessions a year.
